Backwell Students Grill Hotel Bosses During Site Visit

Sixth form students from Backwell School visited one of North Somerset’s most thriving businesses to learn about customer service and communication.

Taking place at Cadbury House in Congresbury, having tucked into a hearty breakfast, the 22 students enjoyed a series of short presentations from the venue’s senior management, after which they were given a tour of the venue so they could see for themselves what it takes to make the £10 million turnover business tick.

Forming part of their Business and Economics A Level course, the students grilled staff about their roles and where the venue had invested the £30 million since current owner Nick Taplin bought it back in 2003.

They were also intrigued to find out more about the type of customer the four-star hotel attracts and the benefit of maintaining and developing excellent customer service.

Additionally, they wanted to learn how the multi-award-winning venue tracks and monitors the success of any campaigns which promote things such as wedding fayres, gala dinners, hotel occupancy and health club membership.

Mehmet Kandemir, general manager at Cadbury House said: “It’s always great to welcome students from our local schools. Visiting venues like ours provides them with a vital insight into how businesses work day in, day out.

“As a major employer in the region, we also have a moral duty to inspire and mentor the next generation, and our door is always open to those who want to learn more.

“They were an inquisitive bunch and we wish them the very best as they work towards their A levels and hopefully towards a highly rewarding career.

“Who knows, we may have had amongst us the next serial entrepreneur, Marco Pierre White super-star chef, health club manager or communications guru. What’s important is that we give them the support and counsel to make the most of their future.”

Daniel East, Assistant Headteacher at Backwell School added: “Visits like this enables our students to see first-hand how businesses really work. We can teach the theory but to see it in practice helps improve the studies and units of work the students produce.

“I’d like to thank both Nick (Taplin) and Mehmet for hosting the visit. The students took a lot out of it and really opened their eyes especially in terms of career opportunities in the hospitality sector.”
